Introduction to Jacques Tati's Mr Hulot's Holiday
Katherine Waugh

Katherine Waugh will introduce a screening of Jacques Tati’s Mr Hulot’s Holiday, a film widely regarded as a comic masterpiece, yet behind the comic brilliance lies a sharp critique of rampant consumerism and behavioural and social standardisation. Tati was a master of the art of transforming what appear to be merely slapstick misadventures into resistant if charming acts of non-conformism.
Loved and admired by most great directors, Tati was as innovative as he was mischievous – inventing new cinematic techniques to facilitate his unique Tatiesque vision of the world.
Both David Lynch and Wes Anderson have written on his pioneering use of sound in film, and Jean-Luc Godard commented “What interests Tati is: Everything and Nothing. Blades of grass, a kite, children, a little old man, everything which is at once real, bizarre and charming”.
Katherine Waugh is a writer , curator and filmmaker based in Galway.
